Ingredients
Donuts
3Tbspgranulated sugar
2Tbspbrown sugar
2Tbspunsweetened applesauce, level
1/4cupmelted butter or neutral flavored oil (such as vegetable or canola oil)
1/3cupwater
1/2tspvanilla extract
1cupall purpose flour
1tspbaking powder
1/4tspbaking soda
1tspground cinnamon
1/4tspsalt
Topping
1 1/2Tbspbutter (or dairy-free margarine, if DF)
2Tbspsugar
1/4tspground cinnamon
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375F. Spray 6-donut pan (mine is 3 1/4" diameter per donut) with cooking spray – I do this even for nonstick.
Stir together applesauce, sugars, oil, water, and vanilla.
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Add to wet ingredients, and whisk together just until combined.
Distribute batter evenly between the 6 donut openings. For best results, spoon batter into a plastic Ziploc-style bag, and pipe into donut pan through a hole cut in the corner of the bag.
Bake at 375F for 8-9 minutes.
Cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before carefully inverting onto a cooling rack.
In a small bowl, melt butter (or DF margarine/oil). In second bowl, mix together cinnamon and sugar topping. Dip top of each donut in the butter, then dip in cinnamon sugar topping.
Notes
If baking dairy-free, be sure to use DF butter or oil.
