Caramelized Cinnamon Apples

Caramelized Cinnamon Apples

Caramelized Cinnamon Apples are an easy way to elevate any apple cinnamon flavored food. We love to top our egg free Apple Cinnamon Waffles or my eggless Apple Cinnamon Pancakes with them!

This apple topping would also be excellent on French Toast or on top of cheesecake. Or, like my 3 year old, you can simply enjoy them with a fork!

Sweet and buttery caramelized cinnamon apples are surprisingly easy to make. Besides apples, the only ingredients you’ll need are butter or margarine, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

You’ll steam the apples in a frying pan with the butter until they’re your desired softness. Then add the brown sugar and cinnamon, and cook another minute or two until they’re perfectly soft and golden.

If your apples are soft, they may release some juice. To thicken up the sauce, sprinkle 1/2 to 1 tsp of flour on top, and stir into the hot apples. This will help thicken it up.

These simple caramelized cinnamon apples can also be made dairy free / vegan. Just substitute dairy free margarine for the butter for this option.

Ingredients

  • 2 apples
  • 2 Tbsp butter or margarine
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  • Wash and peel your apples. Dice into 1/2 inch cubes.
  • Melt butter or margarine in a frying pan over medium heat.
  • Add apples and cover, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes (or until they reach desired tenderness).
  • Stir in brown sugar and cinnamon until apples are evenly coated. Cook another minute or two, stirring frequently, until the brown sugar mixture has thickened. If your sauce remains thin, stir in 1/2 to 1 tsp of flour to thicken it up.
  • Use as a topping for a variety of foods or, like my 3 year old, enjoy with a fork! 😉 (Use caution when serving to children – apples will remain VERY hot for several minutes after cooking).

Notes

Note: If your apples release juices and the sauce is thin, stir 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of flour into hot apples. This will thicken up the sauce.
