Garlic Herb Bread (Dairy Free, Baked Egg Tolerance recipe)

Garlic Herb Bread - dairy free

This savory and soft Garlic Herb Bread is a great side, and pairs well with many dishes! Serve it as a side with pasta, slice it up and eat it with spinach dip, or pop it in the oven with some butter and garlic to make some tasty garlic toast. My 2 year old sometimes eats it as an afternoon snack, too.

My savory garlic herb bread recipe also offers a serving of “baked egg” for those who are allergic to eggs, but can tolerate baked eggs. Read more information about egg allergies and baked egg tolerance from FAACT here.

If using DF cheese, this bread can also easily be dairy free! The recipe makes one small loaf, so it’s perfect for a family dinner. It’s a nice alternative to the sweet muffins and cake recipes we often use as “baked egg” recipes.

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you may know my son passed his “baked egg challenge” about two months ago. I’ve been experimenting with new recipes to give him. I’ve had about the same number of failures as successes with creating recipes, so they are a little slow to come. It’s a delicate balance between “baked long enough” (30 minutes minimum at 350F) and “not dry”… which is hard to accomplish with the long bake time.

My son is over the idea of eating muffins for breakfast to get in his baked egg dose, and many of the store bought options have long ingredients lists, with unknown amounts of egg. I personally like to get as close to the max dose of 1/3 of a baked egg as possible to (hopefully!) help my son outgrow his egg allergy. This dairy free “baked egg” Garlic Herb Bread is another one he actually enjoys… a rare find! He also loves my new cinnamon swirl bread as a baked egg option.

We are no stranger to food allergies in this house. My 2 year old son has peanut and tree nut allergies, and is also allergic to egg (he had an anaphylactic reaction to scrambled eggs at 7 months). We’re working on helping him outgrow his egg allergy with Sublingual Immunotherapy treatment (SLIT), and he is newly able to eat egg in baked form.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • 1 ½ Tbsp parsley flakes

  • 2 Tbsp vegetable or canola oil
  • 2/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or shredded DF cheese)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F. Grease or spray 8×4 loaf pan with cooking spray (may also use 9×5 loaf pan – the bread will just be more shallow).
  • In large bowl, stir together all dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and parsley flakes).
  • Add eggs, oil, and water to dry ingredients, and stir until thoroughly combined. Stir in ½ to ⅔ cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Pour into prepared loaf pan. Bake at 350F for approximately 40 minutes, or until toothpick or knife comes out clean from the center.
  • Carefully transfer to wire cooling rack. Serve warm, or cool completely before storing in airtight container.

Notes

Baked Egg Tolerance doses:
For 1/3 egg per serving, slice bread into 6 equal sized slices. For 1/4 egg per serving, slice into 8 equal sized slices.

Hi! My 17 year old is working on 2 years of baked egg and trying to find recipes that he still wants is tough! We find that the sweet breads for him cause more stomach discomfort than the savory breads so we are sticking with those. Thank you so very much!! Trying to get his doses in is tough with schedules and finding something he will eat. He’s a great kid- just 2 years of eating the same bread week after week was wearing on him (and me!). Thanks again!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I’m trying to think of other savory baked-egg options, but it’s hard when so many quick breads are sweet. Hopefully I can add some more savory options at some point. 🙂

Wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to develop and share these recipes! It is tough to find enough variety of recipes that will work for baked milk and egg to keep them from getting bored–especially as a non-baker! Thank you!

Hello! I haven’t tried, but it should work out in a muffin tin instead. You’ll just want to keep an eye on them, and adjust the bake time. 🙂

Oh my gosh SO excited to find these recipies! My son had an anaphylactic reaction to scrambled eggs at 7 months too. ❤️ he still has an anaphylactic reaction to dairy. Would it be ok to just skip the cheese all together? Thank you so much! Can’t wait to make the cinnamon bread too. He’s getting sick of oatmeal in the AM

Hello! I haven’t tried it without the cheese myself, but you may want to try cutting down on the water a tad since some of the dry ingredients will be removed. Maybe try 1/3 cup of water instead? Let me know how it turns out if you do try it this way! 🙂
(I’ll have to give it a try, too!).

Hi! I did try it without the cheese, because my son is allergic to dairy too. Its ok, but probably less water will make the difference. I wanted to take the opportunity also to thank you for this website and your recipes. They have been super helpful in our egg introduction and he loves your muffins!

Thank you so much! I’m glad they’ve been helpful for your family. I’m hoping to add more dairy free “baked egg” recipes soon, because I know kids often have allergies to both.

Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! My 10 mo daughter is allergic to milk, eggs and peanuts. She passed baked egg test and I was given recipe for muffins to make for her yet she’s not into it. I had found this bread recipe, ran it through our allergist and she approved it. I used vegan cheddar cheese and it came out great and my daughter loves it! Thank you and I will be looking more into your other recipes 🙏🏻

Hi Aga! I’m so glad your daughter enjoys it! I know how hard it is to find “baked egg” recipes our kids actually like. My three year old has been a tough one to please in that area, too. Cinnamon Swirl Bread is my personal favorite of my baked egg tolerance recipes! 🙂
